Spent fuel signatures

Signatures are signals (alone or in combination) and other characteristics that can be used to identify specific phenomena. Spent fuel signatures are the characteristics of spent nuclear fuel that can be used to verify its presence, identity, integrity, and nuclear material content.

Spent fuel safeguards rely on nuclear material accountancy and non-destructive analysis (NDA) methods based on the physical and radiation signatures of spent nuclear fuels.
