A technique of isotopic analysis whereby small quantities of a sample are ionized, formed into a beam and passed through a strong magnetic field which deflects the ions according to their masses, thereby producing a mass spectrum on a fixed detector. The intensities of the deflected beams of ions of different masses are measured to yield the isotopic ratios. See below for two examples of different mass spec systems
