A nuclear material which can be converted into a special fissionable material through capture of one neutron per nucleus. There are two naturally occurring fertile materials: ²³⁸U and ²³²Th. Through the capture of neutrons followed by two beta decays, these fertile materials are converted to fissionable ²³⁹Pu and ²³³U, respectively.
