The isotope of hydrogen with mass number 2, ²H, is commonly called deuterium (symbol D); it occurs naturally with an abundance in water of about 150 parts per million. The highly enriched form of water (heavy water, more than 99.5% D2O) is used as a moderator in natural uranium fuelled reactors.
