African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Pelindaba Treaty)

  • Opened for signature in 1996
  • In force in 13 states in the region
  • The Treaty requires its parties not to conduct research on, develop, manufacture, stockpile, acquire, possess or have control of any nuclear explosive device anywhere, and to prohibit the stationing or testing of any such device
  • Additionally, the treaty requires signatory states to
    • declare any nuclear explosive manufacturing capability
    • dismantle and destroy any existing nuclear devices
    • destroy or convert to peaceful uses any existing weapons facilties
  • The above provisions result from the weapons program in South Africa prior to the end of apartheid
